Heartburn

General description

Your stomach normally produces acid to help digest the food you eat. Sometimes your stomach produces too much acid. When this happens the acid produced in the stomach travels up the espohagus which is a tube connecting the mouth to the stomach. When this happens you may experience pain or “heartburn”. The esophagus is located below and behind the breast bone. The pain or “heartburn” is felt through your chest and may radiate to your neck and back.

Everyone experiences occasional heartburn but if it is ongoing and persists for long periods, it may damage the lining of the stomach and esophagus. This may lead to a more serious medical problem.

Symptoms of Heartburn Include:

  • Chest Pain
  • Chest Pain that is worse after eating, lying down, and/or sleeping at night
  • Dark Stools

GERD

When you feel food and/or liquid travel backwards from the stomach to the esophagus this is called GERD. GERD is the acronmym for gastroesophageal reflux disease. In some people, GERD is caused by a malfunction of the valve located on the top portion of the stomach, which keeps it closed when you are not eating. In other people GERD is caused by the protrusion of the stomach above the diaphragm of the chest cavity. However the most common cause of GERD is the excessive production of acid in the stomach.

Symptoms of GERD include:

  • All the symptoms of Heartburn plus,
  • Cough/wheezing
  • Regurgitation of Food
  • Nausea/Vomiting
  • Sore Throat
  • Change in voice
  • Burping
